Greetings Legionnaires and families!
The fall leaves are bursting with brilliant colors in anticipation for the New Year….we here at Roberts Post are also expecting a great New Year to come!
First – Remember to be kind, if for no other reason than the season we are coming into.
Second – Be generous, for one day you too might be in need.
Third – Always be grateful, God only gives us what we can handle, and always what we deserve.
Remember. you are a Legionnaire! We take care of each other. Spread the word, get others to join the party, nobody does it like the American Legion.
Pay attention to our online resources, important dates will be updated as they come up.
There is a poem “The Dash”…it is lovely. The author writes many inspirational poems and books. I’d like to share it with you all this month.
Think of this poem as you go through your life, it has truly touched me, and I hope it touches you all as well.
God bless you all.
For the Good of the Legion,
Debbie Martin, Commander

The Dash
Copyright 1998
I read of a reverend who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard,
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile?
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy’s being read
With your life’s actions to rehash,
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Ladies Auxiliary:
Our next meeting will be December 5, at 7.00 PM. Everyone is welcome to bring snacks to share .We have been seeing new faces and love to see more. So, if you haven’t been or haven’t been in a while we would love to see you and this is a good one because we will have food.
We have adopted a Veteran’s Family again this year. It is an area Veteran who has a wife and two girls. They will get a Thanksgiving Dinner. For Christmas they will get gifts and a food basket. Could you please help thank him for his service and help him in his time of need? Also, bring something in by December 16?
One girl is 12 and on her wish list is shirts, girls 14-16 or women’s small-med socks women’s 9, books about horses, and winter hats & gloves. Her sister is 8 could use shirts, 14-16, girl sock, size 4, and winter hat and gloves. Their Mother could use hat, gloves, crew or ankle socks size9-10, and hooded sweat shirt 3x. The veteran could use long socks size 11, 3x t-shirts and winter hats and mittens.
Of course you can use your imagination and get what you think a family with 8 and 12 year olds would want or bake something for their food basket.
We will also be giving food baskets and plants to area shut-ins and members. If you know of someone that could be on the list, please contact me at 865-4648 or maryofhp@twcny.rr.com. We will be having a box for food donations for our boxes.
Alice is doing a great job on membership. We are at 74 percent. YEAH, Alice!! If you haven’t paid your dues yet, please leave them at the Legion or mail them to Alice Shaler at: 8209 Old Floyd Road, Rome, NY 13440. Make check out to Leon R. Roberts American Legion Auxiliary. Please get them in by December 31, 2011 to be in good standing.
“Thank you” to our Veterans and “thank you” to everyone that has helped in any way. Hope our snow birds had or will have a safe and healthy trip. For the ones that stay here, hope you have a safe, healthy and warm winter. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Remember to support our troops.
Yours, ”in service, not self”,
Mary Briggs, President

TO HONOR THE VETERANS
With dignity and pride they stand, The life they live is dangerous, treacherous, rough, and hard going, But when the fog clears they are the ones who still stand.
